Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has declared he is withdrawing from the race for Ireland's head of state immediately.

He was poised to be a candidate among three standing for the role of Irish president, alongside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Yet, on Sunday evening he stated through a declaration he had "made a mistake inconsistent with his values and his personal standards."

"Considering all these factors, I've chosen to withdraw from the election for president right away and return to the arms of my family," he declared in his announcement.

Further updates expected.
