My Name Is Manchester United: The Die-Hard Supporter Who Battled to Change His Identity

Ask any United devotee from an earlier generation regarding the significance of May 26th, 1999, and the answer will be that the occasion changed them forever. It was the moment when injury-time goals from Sheringham and Solskjær sealed an stunning 2-1 comeback in the showpiece event against Bayern Munich at the famous Barcelona stadium. It was also, the existence of one loyal follower in Bulgaria, who has died at the age of 62, took a new direction.

Aspirations Under Communism

The fan in question was originally called Marin Levidzhov in a small Danube town, a settlement with a population of 22,000. Being raised in the former Eastern Bloc with a devotion to football, he dreamed of changing his name to… Manchester United. Yet, to claim the name of a sports team from the other side of the Iron Curtain was an unattainable goal. Any effort to do so during the socialist era, he would likely have been arrested.

A Promise Forged in Drama

A decade after the fall of the regime in Bulgaria – on the unforgettable final – Marin's personal goal came one step closer to fulfillment. Watching the final from his modest home in Svishtov and with his team losing, Marin made a promise to himself: should his team mount a comeback, he would spare no effort to change his name that of the team he adored. Then, the impossible happened.

Marin fulfils his dream of visiting Old Trafford.

Years of Judicial Challenges

The following morning, Marin sought legal counsel to present his unique case, thus initiating a difficult fight. His dad, from whom he had gained his fandom, was long gone, and the 36-year-old was residing with his mom, employed in miscellaneous roles, including as a laborer on £15 a day. He was hardly making ends meet, yet his aspiration grew into a mania. He quickly turned into the local celebrity, then gained worldwide attention, but a decade and a half full of judicial disputes and discouraging rulings lay ahead.

Copyright Hurdles and Partial Victories

The application was turned down at first for intellectual property issues: he was not permitted to adopt the name of a world-famous brand. Then a local judge allowed a compromise, saying Marin could change his first name to Manchester but that he was not to use the second part as his official surname. “Yet my aim is to be associated with just a place in England, I want to wear the name of my beloved team,” Marin stated during proceedings. His fight went on.

Companions in Adversity

When not in court, he was often tending to his pets. He had many animals in his garden in Svishtov and cherished them equally with the his team. He gave each one a name after United players: such as Vidic and others, they were the celebrity pets in town. The one he loved most of the name they used? The feline known as Beckham.

His attire consistently showed his allegiance.

Breakthroughs and Principles

Another victory was secured in court: he was allowed to add United as an recognized alias on his ID card. But he remained dissatisfied. “I won’t stop until my full name is as I desire,” he vowed. His story soon led to financial opportunities – a chance to have club products made using his identity – but despite his financial struggles, he turned down the offer because he refused to make money from his beloved team. The Manchester United name was inviolable.

Goals Achieved and Enduring Symbols

A documentary followed in that year. The crew turned Marin’s dream of visiting Old Trafford and there he even had the chance to see the Bulgarian striker, the national team player then at the club at the time.

Marin tattooed the club badge on his forehead subsequently as a protest against the judicial outcomes and in his final years it became ever tougher for him to continue his legal battle. Work was limited and he was bereaved to the virus. But somehow, he found a way. Originally of Catholic faith, he got baptised in an orthodox church under the name Manchester United Zdravkov Levidzhov. “Ultimately, my true name is recognized with my true identity,” he would frequently remark.

Earlier this week, his heart stopped beating. Perhaps now Manchester United’s restless soul could finally find peace.
