British government has placed an additional eleven new nations to its public advisory list concerning the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

The expanded warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol toxicity.

Only last month, authorities had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, following several serious incidents such as the fatal demise of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic substance typically employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This substance is not intended for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the production of beverages, reputable manufacturers lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the purification method.

But in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to notice.

Government Advice for Travellers

Authorities representative a senior official stated that each tourist should be aware of the signs of industrial alcohol contamination.

"While having drinks in foreign countries, opt for trusted places and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official warned.

"Should anything seems unusual, for example a fatigue that's way worse than normal or blurred eyesight – get medical help right away."

The full register of nations noted as posing a risk of methanol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
